Raynold and Jeffrey started working together in the early
90's, when Jeffrey returned home from duty in the Marine Corp. At that time,
two cable skidders and an old fellerbuncher were used to harvest full-tree beech
for chipwood in the Ashland area. Since that time, the company has evolved into
a six man full tree operation, with most of the equipment being used, under four
years old. Ray upgrades his equipment on a regular basis to help reduce downtime.
This is especially important, when the nearest dealer is hours away from where you
are working.
Ray is on the job daily to make sure that everything operates smoothly. Harvest
blocks are all walked with pertinent information (waterways, terrain, species,
etc.) relayed to the fellerbuncher operator. The company currently uses Global
Positioning Systems (GPS) to help the fellerbuncher operator; this also helps to
pass the information to the two grapple operators in the form of printed maps.
Trails and bunches are easliy recognized on these maps. This in turn makes the
grapples more efficient at providing wood for the stroke delimber. Ray was quick
to learn that continuous improvement is needed for survival.
